The Core Psychological Principles Behind Neurodesign
6 Mar 2025 · Medium
This is the second piece in Mohamed’s neurodesign series on Medium. After introducing the idea, he walks through five principles that sit underneath interfaces that feel easy: managing cognitive load, building visual hierarchy, using colour with intent, engaging more than one sense, and designing for the patterns people already recognise.
The essay is as much about ethics as technique. The same tools that reduce friction can be used to nudge people without their knowledge. His argument is that transparency is what keeps neurodesign from collapsing into manipulation — the designer still has to be trustworthy.
Kenyan examples sit next to product ones: matatu typography as hierarchy, protest colour as urgency, Netflix and YouTube as load-reduction machines. The full walkthrough, with the examples unpacked, is on Medium.
